I've heard that some AP's have some extra stuff to make it harder to capture IV's, I did the test with a BEFw11S4 v1. On a small SOHO router where theere isn't file sharing that could take some time.

Yeah its not totally the std bodies fault, but they need to make it clear that this stuff will most likely not be compatible with 802.11n. 802.11n is being dinked around with, but vendors are releasing their 'preN' gear. IMNSHO, if this data is really sensitive, you should abandon doing the encryption at the wireless level and switch to using IPSec or similar. They're dealing with enough personal and financial customer info that it's really not something they should take any chances with. WPA-PSK is still vulnerable to dictionary attacks. WPA-PSK with an AES cypher is a much stronger solution in that AES has never been shown to be cryptographicaly weak. It took me two weeks to get enough packets in my lab, and that rig was setup to constantly trasnmit data.

Even 128bit WEP keys can be factored and cracked within less than a day on a busy network. The flip side is that it takes alot of data to break a WEP key.

It is known how to guess the passphrase if enough data is sniffed out of the air. WEP uses a cryptographicaly weak encryption. The 'enterprise' forms of WPA are probably safe, but I wouldn't be conformatable sending sensitive data over them unless I was using another, more trusted, encryption layer (e.g., SSL or IPSec). WPA-PSK/TKIP has been found to only only marginally better than WEP. IMO, if you're doing any of these, you should be doing it on a wired, not wireless network. When all's said and done, the card is just a radio.ДЄctually, it's closer to a ethernet card with a DSP and radio on board, but that's not really relevant. Also if its a Linksys keep holding your breath.

Be aware that there are often several version of a given model and drivers can be version specific. If a card support WPA try and get the latest drivers/firmware from the mfg site.

Most of this is a rehash of what rabid said. The downside is that it really needs a hardware encryptor/decryptor for performance reasons.

This is good for 802.11B support and for wirless handhelds. The TKIP mode uses a WEP key and just changes the key every 300 seconds or so. For the buisness use it should be mandatory to use WPA, especially if you friend is dealing with customer financials, legal information, or medical data.

So far the Cisco Aironet cards, and the Intel wireless drivers are the only B series I've found to support WPA. Why give away the milk if you can sell the cow. Thats part of the reason why very few B cards will do WPA. Pretty much any 802.11G card will do WPA.
